Precision Bearings: Classifications and Fits

1. Classification & Requirements

According to ISO standards, bearing tolerance classes are designated (in increasing order) as P0, P6, P5, P4, and P2. P0 represents normal precision, while the others are designated as precision grades. Although classification methods vary by standard and bearing type, their technical significance remains identical.

Performance-wise, precision bearings require high rotational runout accuracy, high-speed capability, low friction, and minimal friction fluctuation.

The key differences between precision and standard bearings include:

1. Dimensional Tolerances:Higher-grade bearings have strictly smaller dimensional deviations (bore, outer diameter, ovality, etc.).
2. Rotational Accuracy:Higher-grade bearings require tighter rotational tolerances (radial runout of inner/outer rings, face runout with raceway, etc.).
3. Surface Geometry & Quality:Higher-grade bearings demand more rigorous surface form and finish (raceway roughness, roundness error, profile deviation, etc.).
4. Material Performance:Higher-grade bearings utilize materials with superior mechanical properties compared to standard grades.Generally, standard rolling bearing precision is classified into six grades (from low to high): 0, 6, 6X, 5, 4, and 2.

2. Fits for Precision Bearings

To prevent excessive bearing deformation after installation, the following rules must be observed:

• Geometric Accuracy: The roundness of the shaft and housing bore, as well as the perpendicularity of the shoulders, must match the corresponding precision grade of the bearing.

• Interference Calculation: Calculate both the interference fit for the rotating ring and the appropriate fit for the stationary ring. The interference for the rotating ring should be minimized. It must precisely offset thermal expansion at operating temperatures and centrifugal forces at high speeds to prevent creeping or sliding on the mating surfaces. For the stationary ring, select a minimal clearance or interference fit based on load and size; excessive looseness or tightness will distort its original shape.

• High-Speed & High-Temperature Conditions: Avoid an overly loose fit for the rotating ring to prevent eccentric vibration. Simultaneously, eliminate any clearance in the stationary ring fit to prevent deformation under load, which can induce vibration.

• Mating Surface Quality: A slight interference fit for the stationary ring requires highly accurate geometry and low surface roughness on both mating components to avoid installation and disassembly difficulties. Additionally, the thermal elongation of the spindle must be considered.

• Bearing Type & Load Factors: Spindles using matched pairs of angular contact ball bearings usually carry lighter loads; excessive interference will drastically increase internal axial preload, causing adverse effects. Conversely, spindles using double-row short cylindrical roller bearings or tapered roller bearings carry heavier loads and require relatively larger interference fits.
